The rider phones you the moment he arrives. So if you are not standing at the door at that exact second, nothing is lost: your phone rings, you answer, and you come down or ask him up.

That one fact removes most of the worry about sending hot food to a Dubai tower, villa or office. Only two things turn an easy hand-over into a headache, a phone nobody can reach and a location nobody can find, and both of them are in your hands. Here is how to get them right, and what to do if something still goes wrong. If it does, the kitchen answers at any hour on 04 321 8882.

What happens between paying and the food reaching my door?

Knowing the order of events makes the wait easier to plan around.

  1. You order on the site and pay by secure online card payment at checkout. That is the only payment method, so nothing at all is owed at the door.
  2. The kitchen confirms your order and sets an estimated time.
  3. You follow the order's progress on its own page on the site.
  4. The rider sets off with your food packed for the journey.
  5. The rider arrives and phones the number you typed at checkout.
  6. You answer, and the last fifty metres get sorted out between the two of you: lobby, gate, lift, or straight down to the car.

Step five is the one this article is about. Contact between you and the rider is an ordinary phone call, and a person on a call can be told "second tower, the entrance facing the car park, give me two minutes" and will simply understand it.

Why is the food handed over in person?

Because kalle pache is not a doorstep item. Most of an order is hot liquid, the broth, the brain soup, the juices that keep trotters and tongue tender, and it is packed to be carried upright and passed from hand to hand, not balanced on a mat next to a shoe rack. Standing in a corridor it goes cold, and a bag of soup on the floor is one distracted step away from being soup on the floor. A hand-over takes fifteen seconds and settles all of it. That is a practical note about handling food, not medical advice; if you have a specific health concern, please ask your doctor.

What do I need to get right at checkout?

Two fields do almost all the work, and neither of them involves creating an account. There is no sign-up and no password anywhere on the site: you give a name, a phone number and, for delivery, an address, because the kitchen and the rider genuinely need them.

The phone number. The number you type is the number that rings. Check the digits before you pay, use the phone that will actually be with you, take it off silent, keep it near you, and answer unknown numbers around the estimated time, because a rider calls from an ordinary mobile you will not recognise.

The location. Delivery asks for two things: your Dubai area, chosen from the list, and a pin dropped on the map. The area sets the delivery charge, and delivery is free on orders over AED 300, while the pin tells the rider the exact door. Drop that pin on the entrance you will really walk out of, not in the middle of the compound or on the far side of a tower, and a rider who would otherwise circle the block arrives first time.

What if I have to step out before it arrives?

Then have somebody you trust take it, and arrange that live, on the call. A partner, a flatmate, a colleague, the reception desk downstairs, the guard on the gate: any of them works, because the rider is speaking to you and can be told exactly who is coming down and where to stand. And if you already know you will be out, phone 04 321 8882 early, before a rider is sent to a door nobody is going to open.

I missed the call. What now?

Call 04 321 8882 straight back, the moment you see the missed call, rather than waiting to be rung again. The phone is the only contact channel, it is answered around the clock, and the kitchen is the one place that can speak both to you and to the rider. Give your name and the number you ordered with; that is how your order is found.

Can I change the address or cancel after I have paid?

Not from the website. There is no cancel button and no edit button on the site, and pretending otherwise would only burn the minutes that count. What you do instead is telephone 04 321 8882, quickly. Speed is the whole thing: a kitchen that never closes may already have your brain soup on the heat and your sangak in the oven. What is actually possible depends on how far along the order is, and you will be told plainly on the call.

Separately, if the kitchen cannot fulfil an order, that order is rejected with a reason, the reason is shown to you on your order page, and the card payment is refunded automatically to the card that paid. How quickly your bank posts the money back is between you and your bank, and nobody here can promise you a date.

Does a scheduled or pre-dawn order work differently?

No. The kitchen is open 24 hours, every day, so a delivery at five in the morning is an ordinary order rather than a favour. You can also schedule one in advance, picking a future time up to roughly two days ahead. Everything after that is identical: confirmation, an estimated time, the order page, and a phone call at the door. The one extra piece of advice is to make sure the phone beside you at that hour is the one whose number you typed.

Would it be simpler to collect it myself?

It might be, and you can choose pickup or dine-in at checkout. Pickup means you collect from 64 Jumeira Street, Jumeirah 1: one kitchen, no branches, so there is no wrong address to drive to. Dine-in lets you reserve a table, and it is the only way to have a Kettle of Tea, which cannot be delivered. If you are weighing the three up, our guide to delivery, pickup or dine-in compares them honestly.

The short version

  • The rider phones on arrival. Answering the phone is the whole job.
  • Type the right number, keep it on and near you, and answer numbers you do not recognise.
  • Choose your area and drop the pin on the door you will actually use.
  • If you must be away, arrange the hand-over on the call, or ring ahead on 04 321 8882.
  • Anything unusual, at any hour: 04 321 8882.

When you are ready, start from the Shaun the Sheep home page. After that it is a phone call, a doorway, and then breakfast.
